Bring the family on a zany, surreal, puppet-filled adventure through a world, not so different that of a popular block based mining game, as we explore technology and learn different perspectives of perceiving the world.

PlayCharacter wakes up in an unknown flat world lush with green and natural resources as far as the eye can see. They don’t know who they are, but they have one instinct: to build. And mine. And maybe even craft. Follow PlayCharacter through OverWorld! as they let their heart guide them on a zany adventure through a world, not so different from a popular block based mining videogame, as we explore themes like technology and learning different perspectives of viewing the world. Theater, puppetry, and play will create an adventure that everyone can enjoy, from small humans to big ones.
We live in a time of screens, internet, and technology oh my! And as more time passes, we seem to become more and more reliant on the various smart devices in our daily lives. No generation experiences this greater than our youngest who, not completely unlike the generations prior, often live very full if not fuller lives on the internet than they do in their physical lives. Often this leads to a fundamentally different understanding of reality, which can cause miscommunications and misunderstandings and mistakes galore! OverWorld! hopes to demystify this dissonance through silly storytelling, engaging activities, clearly recognizable iconography and zany visuals tailored to the technological experiences of all generations.

Book and Lyricist, Co- Producer
Rose Farrell (she/her) is a writer, director, producer, and general lover of tomfoolery. As a producer, she’s helping foster two new artists' collectives. The first, GamePlay Theatre Lab, focuses on creating queer led choose-your-own adventure theatrical experiences, with which she’s created two shows: Adam Sandler Jury Duty, and The Clownssacre. The other, My Mother Once Read, is a touring children’s entertainment company that aims to create contemporary art geared towards young people, and mobilize it to communities throughout the city. She’s a jack-of-all-trades theatre artist, and has worked with companies such as The Wilma Theater, Theatre Exile, Playpenn, and Quintessence Theatre Group in a variety of different roles and capacities.

This is Julian's second time making puppets for My Mother Once Read, the first being last year's Hundred Acre Park. He is a puppeteer, painter, sculptor, and just a general visual artist. He played a lot of video games with friends during the pandemic and has memories of begging his parents to download a number of games, such as the free beta version of Minecraft, onto their home computer as a kid.
Additional Sound
Alex Werthauer is a songwriter, sometimes playwright, sometimes actor, and generally creative guy. You may know them as Kirby747, from their days moderating the Citi-Build Minecraft server. They're super pumped to be working on their first My Mother Once Read production!
